Nickel & Nickel was founded by the Far Niente partners in 1997 with a specific brief: make single-vineyard, single-varietal wines that show the personality of individual sites rather than blending them away. Every bottling is 100% varietal from one vineyard.
The winery sits on a restored historic farmstead in Oakville, and the buildings are a large part of the appeal. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, drawing on the most coveted appellations in the valley, with Chardonnay alongside. Tasting several single-vineyard Cabernets side by side is one of the clearest ways to understand how much Napa dirt varies over short distances. Michael scores ambiance and wine at 8 apiece.
