Far Niente is a historic Oakville estate and the centre of a family of Napa wineries. The name comes from the Italian phrase il dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing, which sets the tone for a visit built around unhurried private tastings.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the core, with Dolce, the late-harvest dessert wine, as the estate's distinctive contribution. The wider group includes Nickel & Nickel, Bella Union, Post & Beam and EnRoute, and three of the wineries can be visited, which makes it easy to build a day around one family's range. Michael scores the ambiance a 9 and the wine an 8. Reservations required. A benchmark stop on a Napa Cabernet route.
