Prager has been making Port in St. Helena since 1979, which makes it one of the few places in Napa Valley genuinely specialising in fortified wine. Forty-odd years in, the family still owns and runs it.
The range covers Vintage, Tawny and White Port, plus Petite Sirah and a Late Harvest Riesling as table wines. It is a small, idiosyncratic place, and the tasting room itself is part of the charm rather than a polished showroom. Michael scores the staff an 8. Tastings are seated and by appointment, though same-day walk-in reservations are sometimes available if you call. A genuinely different stop to break up a central Napa day of Cabernet after Cabernet.
