Philip Togni

Philip Togni Vineyard sits at 2,000 feet near the top of Spring Mountain in Napa's western hills. The Tognis arrived in 1975 and started planting in 1981, though vines were first put in here at the end of the nineteenth century. The oldest current plantings date to 1985.

The vineyard is ten acres, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the family farm it themselves using organic practices. Philip studied under Emile Peynaud at Bordeaux and worked at Chateau Lascombes before coming to Napa in 1959; his daughter Lisa has done harvests at Chateau Leoville-Barton. The wines are the estate Cabernet and Tanbark Hill. Michael scores ambiance and wine at 9 apiece. A rare, serious stop for a Napa Cabernet itinerary.
