Elizabeth Spencer is a hidden retreat in the heart of Rutherford, built around seated tastings in a serene courtyard rather than a bar or a barrel room. That intimacy is the whole proposition and it works.
The wines are handcrafted, led by Cabernet Sauvignon but ranging further than most Rutherford neighbours into Grenache, Malbec, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Michael scores the wine and staff at 8 apiece, which puts the substance ahead of the setting. Memberships run through the Royal Garden and Secret Garden clubs. Open Thursday through Monday, 11am to 4pm, and there is live music on the Rutherford Green through the summer. Book a seated slot for a central Napa day.
