In 1861 Charles Krug built the first commercial winery in Napa Valley. Everything that followed in this valley followed him. The Mondavi family bought the estate in 1943 and have held it for four generations since, which gives the property an unbroken line back to the beginning that almost nothing else in California can claim.
The estate sits on Main Street in St. Helena, and the visit is built around that legacy rather than around a novelty format. Wines run from the Napa Valley core range through Limited Release to Family Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon led, with sparkling alongside, all from sustainably farmed family estates. Michael scores wine and staff at 8 apiece. Visits are by reservation on 800-682-5784. Note that our records also carry a separate Robert Krug entry pointing at the same estate. Pair it with the historic names on a central Napa itinerary.
